The "Rabies and Encephalitis" group of the IPD's Virology Center is interested in viral etiologies potentially involved in acute encephalitis in humans. They constitute a real public health problem, since they are associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The current state of knowledge on these conditions still remains in deficit on the continent. The research projects carried out within the group aim to provide a better understanding of the epidemiology of viral encephalitis in West Africa in general, and in Senegal in particular. One of the ambitions of the "Rabies and encephalitis" group is the continuous improvement of its technical platform. New tools, based on a molecular approach, are therefore constantly being developed. All of this inevitably requires the identification and molecular characterization of the major aetiologies, a better understanding of their biology and the evidence of their infectious potential for humans.
